Our Story

About Grain & Stone

Hardwood flooring installation in progress

A floor should do more than
cover the subfloor.

Grain & Stone started in 2016 with a van, a drum sander, and a belief that floors deserve more than a quick flip-and-cover. Founder Marcus Hale spent his first two years refinishing neglected hardwood in East Nashville's historic homes — the kind of houses where eighty-year-old white oak had been hidden under carpet for decades.

Word spread. The work expanded — from refinishing to full installation, from hardwood to tile and stone, from residential to boutique commercial. Today, Grain & Stone operates out of a showroom in Germantown and serves all of Middle Tennessee. Still sanding. Still obsessing over the details.

What hasn't changed is the belief that started it all: a floor is the surface you live on. It should be beautiful, honest, and built to last longer than you will.

“We believe every home deserves a surface that tells a story — of the hands that laid it, the tree it came from, the earth it was quarried from.”

Material First

We choose every plank, tile, and stone by hand.

Craft, Not Speed

We'd rather take an extra day than cut a single corner.

Floors That Outlast Trends

We install for decades, not for the listing photos.

The details that matter.

Before a single plank is laid, we test the subfloor for moisture, flatness, and structural integrity. Every material acclimates in your home before installation — hardwood for a minimum of five days. We measure expansion gaps to the millimeter.

For tile, we dry-lay the pattern first, check every grout line for consistency, and hand-set each piece. For refinishing, we sand in three passes — 36 grit to open the grain, 60 to smooth, 100 to polish — then apply finish in thin, even coats with proper cure time between each.

These are the steps most installers skip. They are the steps that make the difference between a floor that looks good on day one and a floor that still looks good in twenty years.
